When I was a kid, I used to visit my Dad in Washington, DC for the summer.  One year (it was probably around 1983 when the book came out) I remember reading a book bout a time when technology had been replaced by magic, with a guy who carried around a samurai sword accompanied by a unicorn.  I don’t know what made me think of it tonight, but I started looking around to see if I could find it.

Turns out the book is Ariel, by Steven R Boyett.  I don’t remember much of the book, aside from the fact that there’s a sex scene in it (hey, I was 13 when I read it…), but I do remember liking it. I’m trying not to read too many details of the story because I want to re-read it from scratch, so to speak.

I came across the author’s website and did find out three interesting things about the book:

  1. It’s going to be re-printed later this year. (Pre-order at Amazon)
  2. There’s going to be a sequel, Elegy Beach, released shortly thereafter.  It takes place on the opposite coast of the country, about 30 years later, so I’m not sure if it’s related or just takes place in the same universe.
  3. Ariel is currently available as an ebook.

I went ahead and picked up the ebook, so I think that’s going to be my next read after Malevil, and I’m looking forward to the sequel later this year.
